YOUNG CHEF / NSW
Simon Tarlington is one of our Australian young chef national finalists and chef de partie at Quay Restaurant in Sydney. Here he has shared with us his favourite places to hang out, have coffee and enjoy amazing food in Sydney and Australia.
Pablo & Rustys, Lane Cove
One of my favourite places to grab a cup of coffee is my local coffee shop in Lane Cove. They source and roast their own beans and have a wonderful selection of coffee to choose from. The staff are always friendly and happy to have a chat about the products that they sell.
Le Pain Quotidien, The Rocks My daily stopping point on the way to work for a good brew. The staff are friendly and the coffee is always perfectly made. It’s located inside the old police station and still has the original cells from nearly 200 years ago
Le Renaissance, The Rocks
A place I frequent. It reminds me of being back in Paris.
Does fantastic cheeseburgers and fried chicken. It’s not hard to over order.
Via Napoli, Sydney
A place I visit a few times each month. The pizza is properly authentic Napoli style – with even the waiters speaking to you in Italian. It definitely hits the spot every time. Its no surprise they have a line half way down the block every day of the week.
The Longueville Hotel, lane Cove
My local. It takes ‘pub grub’ to a new level. The menu changes often but still has all the classics.
Nomad, Surrey Hills
Their housemade charcuterie and cheeses are a must if you are planning to dine here. They have a great wine list too.
Cafe Paci, Darlinghurst Another one of my top picks. They have created their own style of food using uncomplicated ingredients and produce dishes of a high standard
Four in Hand, Paddington
Definitely a destination hot spot. Its impossible to beat the whole roasted pig on a spit. Perfectly cooked and generous portions. Its a great place to hold a special event.
Love, Tilly Devine, Darlinghurst
Is a fantastic place to go and enjoy a glass of wine. It has an intimate atmosphere and is the perfect place to go if you want to enjoy good wine with good company.
Miss Peaches, Newtown
A good night out. The cocktails and imported beers are a standout. It’s got a fun atmosphere – where most nights you can catch the locals dancing to 50’s swing music.
The Baxter Inn, CBD Sydney
Has probably the best whiskey list in Sydney. It’s cool, calm and collected with a relaxed atmosphere every day of the week.
Sydney Fish Markets
Incredible! They exceed expectations for quality produce.
Bellingen Community Markets Bellingen NSW
I once stumbled upon the community markets in on the way driving up to Brisbane. Its a shame they are so far from Sydney as I would definitely be doing my weekly shop there.
Growers’ Market Pyrmont
Has a large range of seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables. It also supports local famers and local industry.
The best dining experience that I have had. The evening was faultless. The food was inspiring and the wine matched perfectly with each course. All the staff were knowledgable and complete professionals.
Neiuw Amsterdam, Melbourne
Another one of my top picks. The food is simple but packed with flavour and the cocktail list is amazing. It is always buzzing every night of the week. Perfect for after work drinks or a special occasion.
Franco Choos, Prahran VIC
A hidden gem. Located just off Chapel Street – if you blink you will miss it. It seats just 20 people and is run by a single chef and restauranteur. The menu is Italian-Chinese fusion. The flavour combinations are creative as well as delicious. The wines are thoughtfully selected to match the menu. The food is focused around seasonality and constantly changing.
