Australia’s most prestigious and (as far as we are aware!) only award for young waiters

If you are an aspiring young waiter who dedicated to a career in hospitality and wants to take things to the next level then this is the awards for you! Enter now for the opportunity to meet industry leaders, engage with like-minded peers, challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone, gain constructive feedback from the judges, visit one of Australia’s leading food-growing regions and learn about agriculture & viticulture, and, if you are the 2019 winner, travel overseas and experience a stagiaire at a world-renowned restaurant.

WHO CAN ENTER?

Waiters who meet the following criteria are eligible to enter:

  • Are over 18 years of age and under 30 years of age on Wednesday 7 August 2019
  • Are currently working professionally within the restaurant or catering industry in Australia on a full time basis or equivalent, ahd have been for a minimum of 18 months
  • Are currently working in an establishment that holds a liquor licence
  • Have completed and hold the nationally recognised Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate (RSA)
  • Are not the owner, or part owner of a restaurant/hospitality business
  • Are not a hospitality trainer/teacher on a casual, part time or full time basis
  • Are an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident

    Entry is via submission of a completed online application form and payment of the entry fee by the deadline.

    JUDGING PROCESS

    The judges will assess all eligible applications and select a shortlist of the strongest applications. These young waiters will be invited to Sydney for judging.

    Over the course of two days the selected young waiters will participate in a variety of sessions, for example: masterclasses & workshops; individual interviews; skills & knowledge assessments; wine and menu tasting; and, a pop-up restaurant service ‘wait off’ where they will be evaluated on their service skills; table manner; wine pairings and service knowledge.

    At the conclusion of day one, the top performing waiters will be named the 2019 Young Waiter National Finalists and they will proceed to the second and final day of judging. At the conclusion of the final day of judging the top performing waiter will be crowned the 2019 Young Waiter Winner and the next top performing waiter, the 2019 Young Waiter Runner-up. The winner and runner-up will be announced in August at the awards event in Sydney.

    • 7 August 2019: Awards Event (Sydney)

    THE 2019 young WAITER national finalists will win:

    The 2019 Young Waiter National Finalists will join the 2019 Young Chef and Restaurateur National Finalists on an all-expenses paid tour of one of Australia’s leading food and wine regions to meet and learn from some of Australia’s world renowned dairy, seafood, meat, horticultural and viticultural producers. This prize is made possible with the support of partners such as Porkstar, Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and Rare Medium; and, Virgin Australia who provide our national finalists with their flights to and from the 2019 produce tour destination.
